Car Radiator: Tips and Tricks for Care

Car Radiator: Tips and Tricks for Care

Failure of the radiator is one of the most common causes of breakdowns, but it can be avoided easily. They play an instrumental role in cooling down the engine and preventing it from overheating.

What do they do?

Engines are cooled by radiators, which circulate coolant. It is an entirely circular system:

  1. As coolant enters the engine, it heats up.
  2. The radiator feeds back heated liquid.
  3. The atmosphere is heated by the radiated heat.
  4. Coolant recirculation aids in the cooling process.

It's common to install axial fans in radiators and water pumps to force coolant through them.

Radiators: How to care for them

Different problems car radiators commonly experience are discussed here, along with suggestions on how to prevent them.

Coolant levels are too low

Water and antifreeze make up coolant. When the water is treated with anti-freeze, it won't freeze at subzero temperatures. Additionally, it raises the boiling point. Though, regular checks of coolant levels are necessary. In the case of low pumps, the engine and radiator will not receive adequate liquid flow. Eventually, the engine will overheat and break down because of this.

Every radiator service should include checking the coolant levels and refilling them. It is common to find a coolant gauge next to the speedometer on modern cars.

If coolant levels are dropping rapidly, then there may be a more serious problem that needs to be addressed. The head gasket or heater core may be leaking. It is recommended that you visit a mechanic immediately if you experience these problems.

Choosing the right radiator material

Because copper and brass conduct heat well, older cars often have copper or brass radiators. Nevertheless, the prices of these materials have risen in recent years. Most upcoming cars will likely have radiators made of aluminum. There is no comparison between copper and brass when it comes to heat conductivity. You should ensure that your brand-new radiator is made of aluminum if you are planning on replacing one in your car.

Radiator caps with faults

Misfunctioning radiators are often the cause of this problem, which is often overlooked. Manually filling coolant is possible through the hole covered by the cap. Coolant can, however, leak if the cap isn't properly tightened. Additionally, it reduces the air pressure and makes it more difficult for the water pump to supply coolant to the engine. There can be times when radiator caps become too old and cannot be screwed on as tightly as they used to be. In such a case, they can be replaced very easily and for a very reasonable price. Contact your local repair shop for more information.

Radiator clog

Insects, dirt, dust, as well as small debris like pebbles and stones, can clog radiators easily. The radiator can easily be inspected for external clogs by opening the bonnet. Clean the clog with a suitable cloth if there are obvious signs of clogging.

It is more difficult to remove internal clogs. Check the coolant tank when the engine is cool by opening the radiator cap. It is necessary to drain and replace the coolant if brown discoloration or visible dirt is floating in it. There will always be clogs in radiators, designed to deal with them. Radiators should be serviced at least once a year to prevent clogs from becoming dangerous.

Blockage of the thermostat

Coolant is transported from the engine to the radiator through a thermostat. It is not uncommon for thermostats to jam shut, which causes huge problems to engines because the coolant cannot re-enter the radiator and reduce its temperature. Consequently, the engine fails to function due to overheating. An apparent jam in the thermostat may be the only problem if none of the other problems is present. Local garages can easily replace your car's windshield for a reasonable price if you take it to them.

Final thoughts

In addition to causing serious problems to a vehicle's functionality, overheating can also damage various automotive parts. It is very easy to maintain a car radiator. Follow these tips to prolong the life of your radiator and avoid being stranded on the side of the road!
