Fuel Injection: What is it & How Does it Work?

Injectors deliver a mixture of fuel and air into an engine using a complex system of valves, pumps, and injectors. The engine must be able to perform combustion at the right rate if the right amount of fuel is burned. The engine will not reach its desired speed if there is no fuel injection. An engine that is injected with too much fuel will flood and fail to function. Therefore, the efficiency of fuel injectors greatly affects the lifespan of the engine as well as the number of harmful carbon emissions released.

The Carburetor

It was traditionally air and fuel that were mixed together in carburetors. Due to their inability to guarantee that every valve will inject the same amount of fuel, they are notoriously unreliable. Depending on which fuel injection valve the carburetor is located near, it may be closer to that valve than to another. The twin-carburetors can be used as a solution, but their reliability diminishes quickly as they age since they are nearly impossible to tune and synchronize.

Fuel-injected engines in modern cars produce more power, consume less fuel, and produce fewer harmful emissions.

When fuel is injected, how does it work?

Fuel is usually introduced into the engine through an inlet port with an injector so that it can be combined with the correct amount of air. Fuel injection is a system in which fuel is pressurized to spray out in a fine mist and mix with air from the inlet manifold or port. A car's engine converts fuel into motion by mixing it with air and then burning it in the combustion chamber.

Fuel injectors with multiple points are the most accurate. By doing this, each cylinder is able to receive roughly the same amount of fuel and air. In the event of a malfunction, these devices are very expensive and difficult to replace.

Most cars are equipped with single injectors. Although they do not deliver equal amounts of fuel from every cylinder, they are much cheaper and easier to replace.

How does an injector work?

A nozzle on an injector screws into the inlet manifold or cylinder head. The fuel sprays straight at the inlet valve because they're angled just right.

Continuous injectors and pulse injectors are both types of injectors.

In continuous injectors, fuel constantly flows into the inlet port while the engine is running. Fuel is sprayed from the injector without the injector controlling it. As it is turned tighter and looser, it is like turning a tap via a mechanical or electrical system.

There's no continuous pulse injection. Engines get sprayed with sparks of fuel. To make sure fuel and air reach the engine effectively, this is synchronized with the induction stroke of the cylinder. Through a command unit, fuel bursts can be injected by electrical or mechanical means.

There are mechanical command systems in older cars, but they are complicated and unreliable. Additionally, the throttle doesn't respond well when the operator eases off. This results in the car running more expensively and wasting more fuel.

Most modern cars will have electronic fuel injectors (EFI) since electronic systems are getting cheaper and cheaper to produce.

Advancements in Engine Management

Technology like the Bosch Motronic incorporates the function of fuel injectors into a more efficient and holistic system. The level of oxygen in exhaust gases can be monitored to gauge the exact amount of fuel needed for desired combustion levels. This makes fuel consumption much more economical and reduces the running costs of a vehicle. Furthermore, engine management systems are able to notice when there is an imbalance in ignition timing and fuel delivery. In turn, the engine can automatically tune itself back to normal. As a result, dangerous emissions and fuel consumption are reduced while performance is increased.

Final thoughts

There's been a lot of progress in the car industry over the last 60 years. Fuel efficiency has improved 30 times for engines of similar power. Cars run more efficiently, which reduces air pollution and makes them more affordable.
