Everything You Need to Know About Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

What is ADAS?

Advanced driver assistance systems, commonly referred to as ADAS, are rapidly evolving technologies aimed at enhancing safety in vehicles. Automakers are incorporating more ADAS features into new vehicles each year, but many drivers still aren't familiar with what these systems can do. Understanding the basics of ADAS is important, as the technologies could help prevent accidents and save lives down the road.

ADAS uses sensors, cameras, radar, and other devices to detect the vehicle's surroundings and assist drivers with steering, braking, and maintaining safe distances between vehicles. Common ADAS features include lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, and more.

How ADAS Works?

Lane departure warning systems monitor lane markings on the road and alert drivers when their vehicle begins drifting out of its lane unintentionally. Sensors detect lane lines and if a drift is detected without the turn signal on, the system alerts the driver with visual or audible warnings. This can help prevent accidents caused by drifting into other lanes of traffic.

Automatic emergency braking uses forward-facing cameras and radar to detect when the vehicle may be approaching an obstacle too quickly. If a collision is deemed likely and the driver does not react to slow down, the system applies braking force automatically in an attempt to avoid the crash or reduce impact speeds. Studies show automatic emergency braking has proven effective at preventing rear-end collisions.

Blind spot monitoring displays visual alerts in vehicle mirrors when sensors detect other vehicles are occupying the blind spots on either side of a vehicle during a lane change. This helps prevent accidents caused by collisions with vehicles obscured from view in a vehicle's blind spots. Many blind spot monitoring systems now include rear cross-traffic alerts as well, warning drivers of approaching traffic when backing out of parking spaces.

Adaptive cruise control maintains a safe following distance behind the vehicle ahead by adjusting vehicle speed automatically when needed. Using radar sensors to gauge the distance to vehicles ahead helps drivers reduce speed to keep a safe following gap without having to brake as heavily themselves. Cruise control makes highway driving less fatiguing and can help smooth out traffic flows.

While ADAS technology cannot replace attentive driving, it has great potential to make our roads safer by assisting drivers with some of the most dangerous aspects of operating a vehicle. As these systems continue advancing and become more commonplace, drivers should familiarize themselves with their available features for maximum safety benefits. With proper understanding and usage of ADAS, our highways could see fewer accidents resulting from common human driver errors like impaired responses, blind spots, or drifting out of lanes. Advanced driver assistance gives new meaning to the term "drive smart."
