Collecting NOS, NORS, and OEM Parts

Collecting NOS, NORS, and OEM Parts

Obsolete automotive parts are available in a variety of types. Some are more expensive than others because they are considered by collectors to be able to preserve the authenticity and originality of vintage vehicles that are no longer manufactured. In the world of automotive parts, NOS means new old stock (NOS). These are usually old pieces of equipment that have never been sold retail before.

Is there anything special about NOS parts?

In the original design of building a car, these types of components are the only types that are capable of being used as replacement parts. This is because they are not considered end-of-run automotive parts.

In many cases, especially in vintage vehicles, obsolete automotive parts are required to operate the vehicle. Maintaining old and vintage vehicles is primarily concerned with preserving their original design and composition for serious collectors. The availability of brand-new old stock (NOS) automotive parts is therefore extremely limited, and they are extremely expensive. No longer available parts are generally considered NOS if they meet all the following standards.

1.   Currently, it is not in production

2.   Currently unavailable from the manufacturer

3.   Has been a part of local dealerships' excess inventory for a considerable period.

How else can I proceed?

It is possible to replace parts on old and vintage vehicles in other ways if NOS parts are too expensive or simply cannot be found. Parts that are considered end-of-run are those that have been produced after a vehicle has stopped being manufactured.

Exactly what is an OEM part?

Original Equipment Manufacturer is referred to as OEM. Although these are not originals, they are manufactured by the same company. When there is a severe shortage of NOS parts and there is a high demand from collectors, OEM parts are often produced.  GM and Ford are large automobile manufacturers that have licensed the reproduction of replacement parts for discontinued vehicles to accommodate the hobby of collectors. In addition to functioning identically to original parts, OEM parts can have significant differences in appearance. OEM parts are therefore worth less than NOS parts due to this reduction in originality. As a result, they are much less expensive to purchase.

How do NORS parts work?

The NORS parts are automotive parts that have reached the end of their useful life. During the past few years, this acronym has become one of the most widely used acronyms. A NORS automotive part differs from a new stock (NOS) part in that the latter has been manufactured after the original vehicle has ceased to be manufactured. The parts are identical to NOS parts only that they are replacement parts rather than original items. Moreover, due to the obsessive nature of collecting, it is also less valuable than NOS components. The main difference between the two is that they are both obsolete automotive parts, but in the end, it is all about originality.

Conclusion

As a result, the choice of components used as replacements for faulty automotive parts is entirely dependent on the owner's goals. The owner of a vehicle must purchase NOS parts to maintain the vehicle's originality, as well as its overall value. The use of OEM or NORS parts, however, is a very reasonable compromise if the owner simply wishes to maintain the functionality of a vehicle. However, they will be cheaper to purchase and easier to locate. Therefore, they will result in a depreciation in the overall value of the vehicle.
