The 6 Essential vehicle Fluids of Your Car

How to Check Your Car's Six Essential Fluids?

Our society is heavily dependent on vehicles these days, and we all know that the cost of bringing our cars or trucks to the mechanic can quickly add up. So, the next time you have your vehicle's fluids checked, you can save time and money by checking some essential fluids at home. A skill you will use for your life is knowing how to assess your car. With our six-step guide, you can learn how to check six essential vehicle fluids at home. There are several fluids in your vehicle that you should check (and refill if necessary) to help you save money at your next mechanic appointment. This includes oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, engine coolant, transmission fluid, and washer fluid.

1- Oil

If not the most crucial hydraulic fluid in your vehicle, oil is undoubtedly one of them. It is possible to check your engine oil under the hood, but every car is different, so double check your owner's manual if you're not sure where it is.

Once you have located the oil dipstick, pull it out and wipe it clean on a clean towel or rag. Once it has been wiped clean, reinsert it back in tight, and pull it out.

Now will be the time that you can read it; oil dipsticks have a minimum and a maximum line. You should have your oil just under or right above the entire line. The oil level will need to be increased, and even potential issues such as an oil leak will need to be investigated.

The other important thing to check when checking your oil is that the oil quality is still good. A yellowish amber color means the oils are in good condition. When it turns brown or black, you should change the oil. You may notice other colors if you suspect a leak!

2- Brake Fluid

Vehicle performance depends on the quality of its brake fluid. Driving with brakes is second nature, and we ought to keep doing so. Without brakes, our streets would resemble a hot mess.

Since today's brakes are hydraulic, they create pressure to clamp the brake pads onto the rotors, slowing down the vehicle. You will first check your brake fluid to see if it is not happening or if it is not happening quickly.

We recommend consulting your owner's manual for more information about where the brake fluid is under the hood. There are many causes of brake fluid contamination, including leaks, water, and not enough fluid.

If necessary, add more brake fluid once you have identified the brake fluid. Another thing to check is the quality; make sure that your brake fluid is translucent. If it becomes clouded, it is time to replace it.

3- Coolant

A motor produces heat due to all the combustion and friction. By drawing heat away from the engine and dissipating it through the radiator, coolant (also known as antifreeze) keeps everything cool. This is why maintaining the correct coolant level is essential.

Typically, this fluid needs to be topped off every 50,000 miles, but you have to know how to do it if there's an issue or leak. Remember not to check your coolant while your engine is hot. This could lead to burns from the pressurized coolant. So always check the coolant wait until the engine is completely cooled.

Each car has a different process for checking the coolant. For example, you can check the coolant level in your vehicle's expansion tank by looking at the minimum and maximum indicators. Unless it does, open the radiator cap to check whether the coolant is filled to the top. It is vital to ensure the coolant is of an approved type for your vehicle before adding it and give the radiator a quick burp before re-installing the cap.

4- Transmission Fluid

In the transmission, fluid functions similarly to engine oil: it maintains lubrication and regulates temperature. The transmission contains:

• Gears.

• Clutches (even in automatic transmissions).

• Valves must operate smoothly to provide seamless shifting.

Transmissions rated "lifetime" come with fluid that never needs to be replaced. However, lousy fluid can cause erratic shifting, strange noises, and uncontrollable surging, hindering driving.

Check the fluid first if you are experiencing transmission problems. The fluid level in some cars can be checked using a dipstick, but other vehicles require assistance from a mechanic. For cars with dipsticks, the process is the same as above.

However, the transmission needs to be in Park or Neutral for an accurate reading. Be sure to examine the level and condition of the fluid. Red or amber, it should feel smooth. Dark, cloudy, or grittily colored fluids indicate that something is wrong that needs to be addressed.

If your vehicle has a fill tube, pour it in. To help the new fluid flow through the transmission, move the gear selector through the gears with your foot on the brake after verifying the fluid level on the dipstick. Transmissions are complex pieces of equipment, so if you continue to have problems, it's best to contact a professional.

5- Windscreen Washer Fluid

The windshield fluid isn't as crucial as other fluids for maintaining the wellbeing of your car, but it's still a valuable component. Unless you are running low on windshield fluid, none of the other elements will malfunction. By doing so, you will not be able to clean off any debris, dirt, or insects in the car. However, due to freezing, we do not recommend using water in cold climates.

6- Power Steering Fluid

The power steering system also relies on a lubricant to function correctly, just like the engine needs oil to run smoothly. If you need to check your power steering fluid, locate the reservoir and look at the label on the cap to make sure it is the power steering fluid. You will be able to see how much fluid is left in your reservoir if it is made of clear plastic. Using a dipstick provided with the reservoir will help you check the indicator lines if the reservoir is metal and difficult to read.
