When Is It Time to Change My Tires?

The reality is that unless you are an expert in tire replacement, it can be pretty challenging to determine when a tire is no longer safe to drive and should be replaced due to wear and age. So, it's time to learn how to read your tires if you're wondering, "How do I know when my tires are going to expire?" A better question would be, "How old are my tires, and when should I change them?"

Maintaining a vehicle in excellent condition and avoiding significant errors aren't the only reasons to replace tires regularly. Therefore, you need to replace your tires regularly for safety reasons. If you are considering replacing your tires, consider these seven tips.

  • Clearly visible damage. In addition to wheel misalignment, incorrect inflation pressure, and tire rotation, abnormal wear patterns could signify a need for car maintenance.
  • Defective valve caps. As long as the cap cannot be adequately tightened, it will keep falling off. Consequently, the stem's thread may become stripped. In addition, there is a risk of a damaged valve cap leaking air, allowing dirt, moisture and other debris into the tire.
  • Sounds or vibrations that seem out of place. On smooth roads, strange or excessive noise or vibration emanating from your tires may indicate various problems, ranging from worn suspension parts to improperly inflated tires. Regardless, it is advisable to have a mechanic check out your car as soon as possible. However, the tire may have been damaged due to the vibration, or the tread may have worn unevenly, requiring the tire to be replaced.
  • Bubbles and Bulges. Tire bulges are typically caused by damage to the rigid inner frame of the tire, which allows air pressure to reach the flexible outer layers. If sidewall bulges or bubbles are even on tires with acceptable tread, they should be replaced.
  • Damage to the sidewall. Cracks in the sidewall are typically caused by tire aging. Throughout its lifetime, rubber on tires is exposed to various harsh conditions. As a result, it degrades naturally. For example, a rubber band gets brittle and easily breaks. Even if tires aren't in use and are stored in a place where cracks can occur, the same effect occurs. Sunlight, heat, road surfactants, and ozone exposure are the most common causes of cracking. The latter is more likely to happen when something sharp is hit - like a rock or something sharp.
